This course will offer a survey of Japanese politics with a special emphasis on social and cultural perspectives. The course first focuses on the period between 1867 and 1993 and examines the origins and foundations of Japan’s contemporary political system. We will then shift our attention to the events that plagued the regime in transition after 1993, looking at how particular historical events have disrupted the old regime.
